All eyes followed the selkie who was steadily approaching the queen. His pace was almost that of a determined sprint. Enough time had passed that he could make a move with little interference.
He bowed deeply, out of respect and took her hand into his own. He bowed again, this time, greeting her hand with a gentle kiss. “May I have this dance, your majesty?”
There was a great deal of commotion on either side of them, but in that moment, he was not concerned with status or stature. Keiss wanted to dance with Althea, just as he always imagined they would.
Strings started softly and erupted into a steady waltz. The dancers, with due respect and honest suspicion of the selkie’s intentions, stopped and encircled them; looking on in awe. Her dress swept the floor as he guided them in a perfect circle he hoped would never end.
The ball has begun and Althea had introduced herself to most of her guests but there were so many people she wasn’t sure if she would be able to speak with everyone. But then out of the crowd the red haired Selkie emerged in a dashing suit. Althea couldn’t look away, she had sent the man an invitation but she hadn’t been sure if he would be able to arrive. After all he had many other duties to attend to know that he was in charge of the Selkie guild.
The dashing Selkie took Althea’s hand, with a bow and a kiss he requested for a dance. The young queen was completely taken aback by the gesture, sure she had been asked to dance before. But she hadn’t expected this from Keiss, her face suddenly grew hot and a blushed formed although she couldn’t pinpoint why. “Y..yes of..course..” she stammered out before he took her hand and they descended upon the dance floor.
Placing her extra hand on his shoulder the two began to spin in circles upon the dance floor, as the crowd of guests watched. Although in all honesty Althea wasn’t concentrated on where the crowd was looking instead only the man who held her so firmly and yet gently was the only one that held her attention.
A glowing smile emerged on her lips as she realized how pleased she was to see him. “I’m glad you could make it Keiss” she said softly.
Step, together, glide; they were winding and unwinding in clockwise motion around the room. “Likewise, your majesty.” He jested as they glided. “Although, I suppose you did not have a choice in the matter.” His confidence was gleaming in the smile he returned.
The tempo fell as their arms crossed overhead. Keiss felt the world stop spinning in this heart-skipped moment all their own.
Another tilt and he pulled her back into a promenade. Their eyes never wavering from each other. Her royal palms were clasped lightly in calloused selkie hands, covered in fine Alfitarian silk gloves. As the music intensified, the crowd dispersed and danced in places surrounding them
Keiss leaned in closer, at first to compromise for the confined space. He noticed her glowing smile and whispered to his queen, “Are you enjoying the ball?”
